BEATING A SEVERE DROUGHT BY DOING THINGS RIGHT
The cutover tract in Berrien County, GA (40+ miles north of Valdosta) pictured below was sheared, raked, and bedded during the summer of 1999 and planted in February 2000. The seedlings were released from competition with herbaceous vegetation by band-spray of herbicide as soon as leaves had developed enough to absorb it. The area then was hit by an unusually severe drought that is just now ending. The photo shows what happened even in very tough times when you do things right in establishing plantations.

The U.S. Drought Monitor (click on http://enso.edu/unl.monitor.monitor.html
) shows severity of the drought. Scroll
down near the bottom of the page, and click on the icon for 12-week summary to
see how it developed since September 12.
